TRANSISTOR RADIO DESIGN

Focusing on the design of pocket transistor radios manufactured during the 1950's & 1960's!

CAPITAL YT-282

This fascinating little Capital YT-282 is a real mystery! This is the only one that I’ve ever come across and I can find no reference to it on the Net or in any of my collector’s reference books. It was manufactured by Yashima Electric Ind. Co. Ltd of Osaka Japan circa 1962. It is small measuring just 125mm L x 70mm H. Yashima Electric manufactured two other radios that I’m aware of, the Captain YT-161 and the Captain YT-781.

If you have one or can tell me more about it or Yashima
Electric Ind. Co. Ltd then please do!

This attractive Capital YT-282 features a black and gold reverse painted slide rule tuning dial. It also features a textured gold speaker grill and a nicely designed little cloisonné badge. The plastic cabinet is colored light mauve or pale lavender depending on where you’re from…. it’s a unique mix of blue and grey!

Design wise this two band Capital YT-282 resembles the Sony TR-714 which was Sony's first pocket multi-band radio. Looking inside I can see that it uses 8 Hitachi transistors to pull in stations far and wide.
