These two Penny’s 6TP-243’s were manufactured in Japan by Toshiba in 1959. They were made for the JCPenney chain of department stores and sold by them as a ‘house brand’ throughout the USA.
J.C. Penney Company Inc was founded in 1902 by James Cash Penney and William Henry McManus. The original name for the store was ‘The Golden Rule’, but it was changed to JCPenney in 1917. By 1917, the company operated 175 stores in 22 states in the United States. By 1941, the company operated 1,600 stores in all 48 states.
JC Penny is still going strong today.
These Penny’s 6TP-243’s feature typical high quality Toshiba industrial design! The slide rule tuning dial is under-painted and the volume dial features the same gold concentric rings as found on similar Toshiba radios of this era.
They have kickstands on the back for ‘lounging’. The red example has a white back and the black one has a grey back.

The Penny’s 6TP-243 can also be found branded as a Toshiba 6TP-219 with a plastic diagonal cut speaker grill. Ref Alan Kastner’s RadioWallah.
They can also be found as a Trancel 6TP-243. Ref Sarah Lowrey.
They use the same cabinet as the Gibraltar P-1405 found on my site.
