TRANSISTOR RADIO DESIGN

This Trav-ler TR-600 was manufactured in Japan in January, 1960.

The Trav-ler Radio Corporation was founded in 1921 in Chicago Illinois. They made tube radios, transistor radios, record players and finally, television sets. From 1960 onwards many American transistor radio manufacturers contracted Japanese companies to produce their radios. This came about due to their inability to compete price wise on the domestic market and the popularity of small Japanese sets with consumers.  I’m unsure which Japanese manufacturer produced this radio for Trav-ler but it does have Toshiba parts inside…

This Trav-ler is a remarkable little radio. It is very well made and features a luscious under-painted face with clear sections covering the tuning dial and volume knob, in fact the ENTIRE front half of the cabinet is under-painted, top, bottom and sides! The beautiful gold spear separating ‘Six Transistors’ runs from the volume knob to the tuning dial and acts as a pointer for both. There is a splendid little cloisonné name badge at the bottom of the gold speaker grill! Very cool indeed!

These Trav-lers came in three cabinet colors; red, white and this black example. The red and white colored radios have a slightly different model number of TR-601.

In my opinion this Trav-ler tr-600 is the perfect size shirt pocket radio! It measures just 3.7” H x 2.2” L! Those dimensions are spot on. It feels perfect in ones hand. It is quite slim for its height and that sets it apart from other radios of this era. If you own one of these then you will know what I mean!
 

This marvelous little Trav-ler TR-600 comes with its original gold gift box! The box is in excellent condition. It also comes with a leather case, leather earphone case, earphone, instructions, schematic diagram, instructions on how to open the cabinet and an old ‘Maxwell’ dry battery, made in Japan!

As a bonus it also comes with a vintage price ticket of $29.95 from 'Penn' of Los Angeles California! But wait there's more! It also comes with the original plastic bag for the radio stamped ‘Made in Japan’!
