TRANSISTOR RADIO DESIGN

Focusing on the design of pocket transistor radios manufactured during the 1950's & 1960's!

ZEPHYR GR-3T6

This Zephyr GR-3T6 was manufactured in Japan circa 1958. I am unsure who the manufacturer is but have a look inside it at the bottom of the page for some clues… It is a rather striking and impressive design. There is a variation of this radio in my collection branded as a Peerless with the same model number. This radio is also seen as a Global or Star Lite.

The top of this radio is wider than the bottom so care needs to be taken when placing it on a surface. Check out the unusual shape side on. The coin slot is on the top instead of the bottom; this radio is just full of contradictions. It is very futuristic looking and looks modern and sharp even today.

This Zephyr measures just 65mm x 100mm x 38mm. It is chunky and quirky in appearance. It features a thick, juicy gold under-painted face that is simply ravishing!

The tuning dial is framed by a silver chevron. The horizontal cutouts on the face of the radio complement the black speaker grill and the little Zephyr cloisonné badge looks classy in white and gold. This is a superbly designed radio!

The leather case for this Zephyr GR-3T6 is very classy looking with speaker grill cloth behind the cutouts on the front.
